Description
Udayagiri Fort is located in Puliyoorkurichi, Padmanabhapuram Taluk, Kanyakumari District. This historically significant site was rebuilt in the 18th century by Marthanda Varma, the King of Travancore.
The fort spans an area of 90 acres and encompasses a 200-foot-high hillock. A massive wall made of black granite stones encircles this hillock. Inside the fort, there's also an ancient foundry that was used to cast cannonballs.
Within the fort's Christian chapel, you'll find the tombs of Dutch Admiral Eustachius De Lannoy, his wife, and son. At one point, the fort was even known by De Lannoy's name.
Currently, Udayagiri Fort is under the control of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. It houses a biodiversity park where spotted deer, peacocks, rabbits, and small parrot species are maintained. Additionally, there's a fish museum and a canteen for the convenience of tourists.
